Up From
the Ranks

A still-life series built from one pair of boots: the career they carried, the commission they earned, and the camera that comes after.

The idea

In the Navy, a mustang is a sailor who starts out enlisted and is later commissioned as an officer. This series tells that story without a single person in the frame.

The boots stand in for the person who wore them. Each plate puts them in a different setting and adds one object: nothing but the leather itself, then the Mustang crest of the Limited Duty Officer and Chief Warrant Officer community, then the full shadow box of a career with a camera beside it.

Read in order, the three frames go from service to rank to record, and end with the tool of the next chapter.

Standing
Watch

The boots on their own, shot from standing height, the view you get looking down at your own feet. The polish on the toe caps is the first thing you see; the creases across the vamp and the laces wound around the shafts show years of wear.

Angle
High three-quarter, looking down, so the boots read as a pair waiting to be put on.
Light
Soft, even daylight so the toe-cap shine picks up a clean highlight without glare.
Ground
A white rug with black triangles adds pattern without competing with the brown leather.
Focus
Sharp on the toes and lacing, falling off toward the collars.

Sursum ab
Ordine

The boots go outside and down to ground level, and the crest joins them: the eagle, the rearing mustang, the crossed anchors, the LDO and CWO scrolls. One boot tips against the other so the pair leans in around the emblem.

Angle
Camera at path level, so the boots fill the frame the way a monument would.
Depth
A very shallow depth of field turns the houses, trees and sky into soft shapes; only the leather and crest stay sharp.
Lines
The path runs straight back into the blur, a quiet image of a road already travelled.
Format
Vertical 9:16, made to work as a print and as a full-screen phone image.

History of
Assignments

The whole career in one frame. The shadow box holds the folded flag, ship and squadron patches, ribbons and medals, a History of Assignments plaque, and the insignia that tell the mustang story on their own: enlisted rating badges on either side of the flag and officer insignia above it.

The boots sit on the left and a Nikon film camera with its lenses on the right. The past is on one side, what comes next is on the other, and the flag sits in the middle.

Balance
Boots and camera bracket the box at similar visual weight; the flag’s triangle anchors the center.
Glass
Shot straight on at eye level to keep reflections off the shadow-box glass.
Palette
Walnut, brown leather and a warm floor hold the image together; the flag’s blue is the only cool color.

The sequence

Service

The boots alone. Wear, polish and the discipline of keeping them ready.

Rank

The Mustang crest. Commissioned from the enlisted ranks.
