Two people dressed in the colour of the afternoon.

A couple's session on the Coronado side of San Diego Bay, shot in the hardest light of the day. They came dressed in silver, grey and black, and that palette decided the edit: skyline and water behind them, and the clothes carry the colour.

The session moved in one loop along the waterfront. First the open lawn facing downtown, then the railings and lamp posts along the bay walk, and last a quieter garden by the resort. Each stop gets its own set below, in the order it was shot.

I. The Lawn

Downtown straight ahead across the water. Posed and close, with the skyline as backdrop.

II. The Rail

Along the bay walk: blue railings, lamp posts and sailboats. The jacket comes off, a hat goes on, and the frames loosen up.

III. The Garden

A quiet green behind the resort to close. One bench and two frames: her alone, then the two of them.

Approach

  • Midday, handled. The session ran at 2 pm under a clear sky. I stopped down to f/9–f/13 so both faces and the skyline stayed sharp, and kept the sun off-axis so it lit the side of the frame.
  • Two lenses, one walk. A 16–50mm for the wide environmental frames and a 55–210mm to compress the towers behind the couple (the wall and lamp-post frames).
  • The finishing pass. I lifted shadows on the faces, recovered the bright highlights, and cooled the lawn from neon to natural green. Then light noise reduction for ISO 2500 and output sharpening. One frame was converted to black and white so the moment stays on their hands.
