A home altar against a dark textured wall: pink flowers in a white vase, a memorial candle on a gold-edged Spanish Bible, a framed portrait of an older woman seated in a tufted chair, red rosary beads, a red cardinal figurine, a carved wooden box reading El Salvador C.A., a red plush dog and a small saint statue.
A photo essay in five frames

Hilos

The threads she carried

Photographs by Nina Florida · August 2025 Documentary portrait

An immigrant mother who raised her daughters on her own, photographed in the home she built for them.

Hilos means threads. They run through the whole evening: the rosary strung from her mother's portrait, the yarn moving through her hands, the line between the girls in an old photograph and the woman holding it now.

The five frames follow one thread from past to future. They start with where she comes from, move to what her hands still do every day, and end with her at the screen door, looking out at the life she made.

What she carries

La OfrendaThe Altar · cover frame

Her mother sits at the center, framed. Around her are La Biblia, a red rosary, a cardinal, and a small wooden box carved EL SALVADOR, C.A. It is a whole country kept on one shelf.

HermanasSisters

The frame says God made us sisters, hearts made us friends. Inside it are her two daughters as little girls. The print is older than the house she's sitting in now.

Her hands

Hilo por HiloStitch by Stitch

Crochet is the pastime she never put down. She pulls one loop through the last, again and again, until something warm exists that wasn't there before. She built a family the same way.

El RosarioThe Rosary

These are red beads like the ones hanging from her mother's portrait. She prays for her girls, for the work, and for a future better than the one she was handed.

La VentanaLooking Out

In the last frame her back is to us. Through the screen are a lawn, a fence, and palms in the evening light. That is the life she built, and past it is whatever comes next.

Approach

I shot the series in one evening, 5 August 2025, in her home, using only the light already there. I made four frames on an iPhone 15 Pro Max and the rosary close-up on a Sony α7 IV with a 50mm prime.

I sequenced the frames as a story, not in the order I took them. The evening began with her hands and ended at the altar. The essay reverses that, so it opens on her past and closes on her looking forward.
